Tropicana Field is a domed stadium in St. Petersburg, Florida and is the home to Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays. The stadium has also served as the host stadium for college football’s Beef ‘O’Brady’s Bowl. It is the only MLB dome stadium that does not have a retractable roof. There are four catwalks that hang from the dome ceiling that support the structure. With the stadium roof built at a slant, the catwalks hang lower in the outfield section. Many batted balls from Major League sluggers often reach the catwalks. Another unique feature, just over the right-center field fence, is the Rays Touch Tank- a 35 foot, 10,00 gallon tank filled with cownose rays from nearby Tampa Bay waters. The park was initially built with Astro Turf surface, but was replaced in 2000 by Field Turf.

Originally called the Florida Suncoast Dome upon completion in 1990, the stadium was originally built in an attempt to lure the White Sox to relocate from Chicago. The governments of Illinois and Chicago eventually approved construction of a new Comiskey Park, ensuring the Sox future in Chicago. The dome sat empty until the Arena Football League’s Tampa Bay Storm made their debut in 1991. Two years later, the NHL’s Tampa Bay Lightning moved into the facility and played their home games for the next three years. MLB expanded in 1995, granting Tampa-St. Petersburg the Devil Rays franchise.
