    History

The Minnesota Vikings of the NFL were playing out of Metropolitan Stadium in the early 1970s. For football the stadium was on the small size with the capacity just under 48,500. Stadiums under the capacity of 50,000 were deemed too small by the NFL. With downtown Minneapolis being revilitized and the possibility of the Minnesota Twins also benefiting from a new dome stadium, eased the way for voters to approve funding. Construction began in Dec of 1979 on the Metrodome. Funding for the stadium came by several different means: liquor tax, limited hotel/motel tax, local business contributions and a special tax assessed on a district near the stadium. Associated infrastructure and other costs totaled around $124 million with the Metrodome itself costing $55 million. The stadium was named after Vice President Hubert H Humphrey who also served as US Senator and as former mayor of Minneapolis. Opening in 1982, the Hubert H Humphrey Metrodome became home for the National Football League Minnesota Vikings. The Metrodome’s roof is self supported by air pressure and consists of two layers. The outer layer is a Teflon coated fiberglass and the inner is an acoustical fabric. Since the stadium was built there has been 6 roof incidents. In five of these incidents the roof only had deflated from damage caused by the weather. The sixth incident occurred in 2010 where the roof collapsed. No structural or major damage was done inside the stadium. In 2011 the entire roof was replaced.
