In 1993, Charlotte was awarded an NFL franchise after the announcement made by the NFL that it would expand to 30 teams three years prior. The Carolina Panthers would begin their debut season two years later, so construction began without delay. In 1996, Ericsson Stadium (named after the Swedish telecom company LM Ericsson) opened in Charlotte, NC. LM Ericsson signed a 10-year, $25 million deal for naming rights to the stadium. Bank of America and the Panthers agreed on a 20-year deal for naming rights once the original deal expired in 2004. The stadium name officially changed to Bank of America Stadium that year and is referred by fans as "The Vault", "The Bank", "The BOA", or "BOFA". Bank of America Stadium is a 73, 778-football stadium used to host the Carolina Panthers, as well as the Meineke Car Care Bowl and the 2010/2011 ACC Championship Game. In the early 1990s, Bank of America Stadium was the first large-scale project funded in the United States predominantly through securing Personal Seat Licenses (PSL). The stadium also serves as the inspiration for the latest round of new stadium construction in the NFL. Bank of America Stadium has not gone under major renovations since its conception in 1996. In 2007, the stadium went under a minor renovation when the original scoreboards and replay screens were replaced with high-definition monitors and ribbon boards.
